Many women with small breasts feel self conscious. This feeling manifests itself in varying age groups and the overall effect on the ego can have hindering social consequences. Breast augmentation consists of the insertion of either saline or silicon implants. The implant is placed in between the breast tissue and the pectoralis muscle or beneath the pectoralis muscle entirely. Anesthesia depends on the placement of the implant. Those implants anchored beneath the pectoralis muscle require general anesthetic. Local anesthetic and IV sedation is utilized when the implant is placed between the breast tissue and the muscle.

The procedure itself takes between two and four hours. There are three different sites for the incision. The most common incision site is on the underside of the breast in the crease where it meets the chest. The second most common incision site is made in the areola. The two other incision sites are underneath the armpit and in the navel. These last two are the most difficult for surgeons as they do not allow as much visibility as do the two most common incisions. The insertion and positioning of the implant is dependent upon the size requested and the incision method.

As with all surgeries, breast augmentation has certain risks such as displacement and/or a rupture of the implant. Visible scarring may occur as well a a chance of nerve damage. Some of the more serious risks include bleeding, blood clots, fluid accumulation or capsular contraction (where scar tissue forms around the implant inside the breast causing a visible distortion). Possible revisional surgery may be needed to correct any unexpected or undesirable reaction.
